The Memphis Tigers football program enjoyed a prosperous golden era from 2014 through 2025.
A fixture in the rankings. Annual bowl appearances. Regular wins over SEC programs.
But 2026 entered with a wave of uncertainty following unprecedented turnover throughout the program. Head coach Charles Huff arrived from Southern Miss in December, bringing in a new staff and nearly an entirely new roster, including 17 transfers from Southern Miss and numerous others from across the country.
Yet, all of those
moving parts settled when the Tigers took the field to start the 2026 season.
Memphis traveled to Las Vegas as a road underdog against UNLV and exited Sin City triumphant. Under the national spotlight in a standalone Week 0 contest, the Tigers scored the final 13 points to secure a 27-21 victory over the reigning Mountain West runner-up.
“This was a national statement,” Huff said. “Not just about the score and not just about the game. But that the Memphis Tiger community is serious about this program and the direction this program is going. This was just one game, but the momentum it created, the statement that it’s making is huge.”
When the chips were on the table in the fourth quarter, Memphis unleashed its greatest asset — a commanding defensive line. Led by defensive end Elijah Kinsler and his 2.5 sacks, the Tigers decisively won the battle in the trenches during the opener’s most pivotal moments.
“We’ve got a good d-line,” Huff said. “We still got some things to clean up, but if we can really start to play cohesion football and balance offense and defense, we have a chance to be really good.”
As the game progressed, Memphis’ physical advantage up front only became more pronounced. Four of the Tigers’ six sacks came during the final seven minutes.
The onslaught started when UNLV attempted a 4th and 7 from the Memphis 18-yard line with approximately six minutes remaining, while trailing 27-21. In a game-altering sequence, defensive tackles Taylor Burton and Jaden McKinney swarmed Rebels quarterback Jackson Arnold in the backfield to force a turnover on downs. On UNLV’s ensuing possession, Kinsler sacked Arnold for an 11-yard loss on third down to force a punt. And when the Rebels got one final opportunity with a minute remaining, Memphis rapidly extinguished it with consecutive sacks.
“It was relentless toughness and film watching,” Kinsler said. “I was definitely strong on film watching. We were picking them apart definitely on film. We knew exactly what they were doing before they did it. Our linebackers, Mike (Montgomery), all them calling out plays and calling stuff out — it was unbelievable.”
Huff attributed this closing effort to his team’s practice habits.
“We’re a fourth quarter program,” Huff said. “That starts in January. When everybody else is just tag-touching a cone and feeling really good about themselves, we’re taking them into the deep water. That’s our process. We plan to win the game in the fourth quarter because we work harder than a lot of other teams.”
Although the sacks didn’t begin piling up until the late fourth quarter, Memphis’ defensive line solved another problem from the get-go. The Tigers stifled UNLV star running back Jai’Den Thomas, limiting the First Team All-Mountain West selection to 12 carries for 44 yards. By neutralizing the Rebels’ most explosive offensive weapon, Memphis kept UNLV scoreless until the middle of the second quarter.
“We gotta stop the run to get us to run pass rush,” Kinsler said. “Stop the run on first and second down, so we get to third down and have fun. And we call it, ‘party, party, party,’ because that’s what it is.”
Memphis’ defense certainly partied, holding UNLV to a 3-of-15 showing on third down.
Those frequent third down stops allowed the Tigers’ offense to settle into the game after a slow start. Former Division II standout quarterback Marcus Stokes earned the starting nod over South Carolina transfer Air Noland, and what Stokes did best in his debut was respond. All three times the Rebels scored a touchdown, the junior quarterback guided the Memphis to a tying touchdown less than four minutes later.
“Since we didn’t have a lot of film on what (UNLV was) going to do, we went with Marcus’ experience. Marcus has played more college football than Air,” Huff said. “I thought he played well. He gave us a chance to win. He did not the turn the ball over, which was a big piece of what we talked about. I thought he made good throws when we needed them. We need to do a better job coaching-wise of giving him a little more, ‘This is what they’re gonna do. This is what they’re gonna be in.’ Hopefully we can do that as the year goes on and you get more and more film, but I thought he played well.”
Stokes, who finished with 223 passing yards and 45 rushing yards, saved his best work for a track meet of a third quarter. Coming out of halftime, he hit Mississippi State transfer wide receiver Stonka Burnside perfectly in stride on a 48-yard heave down the seam. UNLV responded with an Arnold-led touchdown drive, but Stokes ensured the Rebels’ advantage would be short-lived. He orchestrated a 3-play drive that ended with a handoff to Jaylin Carter on an RPO, and Carter broke free for a 36-yard touchdown scamper to knot the score at 21.
“We were all yelling, ‘Throw it. No… Great job!’,” Huff recalled on Stokes’ decision to hand it off to Carter. “So there’s some things we gotta continue to work through, but I thought he did well. I thought he gave us a chance to win.”
There were only three field goal attempts all night, but kicking played a pivotal role in the outcome. Memphis’ new kicker Philippe Laforge finished a perfect 2-of-2, handing the Tigers their first lead on a 32-yard field goal in the waning seconds of the third quarter, before extending the advantage to 27-21 with a 36-yarder early in the fourth.
Meanwhile, a kicking miscue altered the complexion of the game for UNLV. With under two minutes remaining in the first half, the Rebels claimed a 14-7 advantage on an Arnold touchdown run. On the next offensive play from scrimmage, Memphis committed the game’s lone turnover when former five-star cornerback Denver Harris stripped the ball from Tigers wide receiver Tychaun Chapman. UNLV threatened to claim a two-touchdown lead, advancing as far as the Memphis 4-yard line. But a clutch defensive stand forced the Rebels to settle for a 32-yard field goal, and Ramon Villela pushed it wide right.
Instead of entering halftime down two scores, Memphis only trailed 14-7, and that sequence sparked momentum for a stronger second half.
“I told them it was gonna be a 60-minute game,” Huff said. “We have to play the whole 60 minutes. We would have to win the game in the fourth quarter. I told them that Monday. I told them that last night at the hotel. I said, ‘Don’t think we’re gonna go out here and just flip a coin and it’s gonna be over. It’s the first game for everybody.’”
Memphis survived the 60-minute fight despite never taking a lead until the final minute of the third quarter. For Huff, the opener in Las Vegas allowed him to learn about his team’s perseverance, which he believes can pay dividends throughout the 2026 season.
“I didn’t know how they would respond if we got down,” Huff said. “I didn’t know how they would respond if the game was close. I know what we train for, but you still don’t know. I learned, one, we got a lot of work to do. But two, we got the right guys. We got the right coaches, we got the right administration. That doesn’t mean every game is gonna go perfect, but that means the things we are training and the process we’re going through is being received. If we do that, ultimately, I think you’ll end up on the right side more than the left.”
Huff hopes the momentum created in Las Vegas can springboard into something greater — not only for the 2026 Memphis football team, but for the program and community as a whole.
“We’re Memphis,” Huff said. “Everything about our community that everything tries to tear down, we’re not. And selling the stadium out next week will make another national statement. We’ve got to improve football-wise — don’t get me wrong — but if we keep making the strides from continuity and community support, we can get to where we’re trying to go… Hopefully everyone can see that everything is aligning at Memphis.”
