In a vacuum, I recognize that needing to come back from a 2-1 deficit with the help of two penalties, one of which your player misses, and a few other lucky bounces, all against the worst team in the league, is not ideal. If Borussia Dortmund are indeed able to run down Bayern Munich in a title race, they will need to be pretty much perfect. Performances like this one will not get the job done in the long term. But a win is a win, and BVB are now six points back in the title chase. They’re an outside
bet, but it’s not looking impossible.
Dortmund struck first when Waldemar Anton converted a penalty. Heidenheim responded with two quick goals on either side of the half, before BVB stormed back and took the lead with another two goals in quick succession from Serhou Guirassy. Despite some pressure from Heidenheim, BVB held on for all three points.
Here are my man of the match candidates
Serhou Guirassy
Listen, he may have missed a penalty by a bajillion meters. The penalty he scored may have been… fortunate. But at the end of the day, Serhou Guirassy was Dortmund’s only consistent attacking threat. It was his challenge against Diant Ramaj that nudged the ball loose for Anton to pounce on. His open-play goal was a classic striker’s finish. Even though he did miss the penalty that would’ve iced the game, it’s worth noting that he also is the one who drew it. A good day at the office, I’d say.
Julian Brandt
Brandt almost had an assist when he played Guirassy in with a great through ball that the Guinean striker chipped off the crossbar. It was also his cross that deflected off Niklas Dorsch’s arm, giving Dortmund a penalty.
Maximilian Beier
I thought Beier showed a really good work ethic today. I cheered way too loudly in my house when he out-hustled a Heidenheim defender to a loose ball in stoppage time. His assist to Guirassy was just the icing on the cake.
Waldemar Anton
I’m not just giving him a nod because he scored a goal on a corner. He also led Dortmund’s defenders in tackles, clearances, and duels won.
