Alycia Baumgardner joined The Last Stand podcast to discuss a variety of topics including her upcoming fight against Elif Nur Turhan, her ongoing beef with Caroline Dubois and assessing her latest fightt, Mikaela Mayer losing to Chantelle Cameron, and a lot more. Check out some excerpts below along with the full video interview.
Baumgardner on her assessment of Dubois’ latest performance
“What I was trying to see what was type of fighter she was going to bring in this fight…That was a lackluster performance, to me. I didn’t see anything spectacular, and again,
as a coach or a commentator or an analyst looking at a fighter, I’m going to dissect it all…and I didn’t see anything special. I could really dissect and know exactly how to beat her. So, again, she’s a champion at 135, this is a big fight that a lot of people want, but she has to get through what she has to get through. I have my biggest test in front of me and that’s Turhan — somebody that she didn’t not want to fight.
“This is somebody that she had an opportunity. So, again, I’m stepping up to the plate to do something you didn’t want to do. So when we talk about stepping up to the plate and making big fights, that’s what I’m doing. And, again, I’m going to show you what it is to carry that undisputed energy into the 135 division.”
On if she sees Dubois as her next fight should she beat Turhan
“I don’t know. Again, I think she’s going backwards. I haven’t seen her progress in a fight that’s like ‘wow, that could be the next fight.’ We still have Stephanie Han in the division. Let them two fight and let me fight the winner and then we can decide who’s going to actually be the best at 135 to compete with me. So, again, Turhan is still the #1 focus but Caroline is going to have to tighten up. Tighten up.”
On Mikaela Mayer’s loss to Chantelle Cameron
“I honestly had Mikaela edging it. It was a 50/50 fight so in my mind I’m like ‘okay, who’s it going to come do to, who’s going to be the most aggressive’. And honestly, Chantelle is that girl. She showed that in the first round…I think this was another close opportunity for Michaela to win but I think she’s missing something, and I think she has to go back to the drawing board to see exactly what that is. I think she has all the tools but something’s missing.”
On Claressa Shields backing Dubois to beat her and even offering to help Dubois prepare for the fight
“There’s nothing Caroline can do. You can have five Clarences in your corner — you’re not going to beat me. I am the top dog, as I’ve been saying. Continue getting your pup cups at Starbucks, baby. This is just a different level where I’m at with all the women. So, there’s no competition in regards to that.”
