To understand the stakes of Saturday’s matchup in Columbia, rewind the tape 12 years to October 4, 2014.
That night at Commonwealth Stadium, Mark Stoops secured a signature win that truly launched his tenure. Kentucky was coming off a miserable 2-10 opening season and had dropped 13 of its last 14 matchups against South Carolina.
Down 38-24 in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats engineered a miraculous comeback, fueled by Jojo Kemp running the Wildcat for three rushing touchdowns and capped by Bud Dupree’s
game-winning 6-yard interception return.
The Cats knocked off Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina 45-38, and Mark Stoops jumped on the local postgame radio show and declared, “We’re just getting started, bro.”
He was right, sort of.
Even though that 2014 squad ultimately lost six of its last seven games to miss a bowl, that victory was a proof of concept.
It alleviated the pressure on the coaching staff, established Kentucky’s belief, and set the Wildcats on a path to rip off five straight wins against the Gamecocks, ultimately leaping them in the SEC pecking order.
Now, the roles are reversed.
Shane Beamer finds himself cast in the role of 2014 Mark Stoops
In his sixth season, Beamer is presiding over a program that is crumbling around him. Following a highly disappointing 2025 campaign that ended in a 1-7 SEC record, South Carolina is off to a rocky 2-2 start, including an 0-2 hole in SEC play. The goodwill in Columbia is mostly gone, with fans flooding message boards and yelling “Fire Beamer” at games.
Beamer needs a signature win, a proof-of-concept moment that can quiet the noise in Columbia and remind everyone why they believed in his program in the first place.
The Gamecocks will take the field at Williams-Brice desperate. They will be playing for respect, fighting for their coach’s job, and looking to give a frustrated fanbase something to actually cheer for.
It’s Kentucky’s job to rip their heart out and crush it.
Over a decade ago, Steve Spurrier allowed a desperate Kentucky team to find some hope, and it helped change the trajectory of both programs for years to come. Will Stein will fight to keep that from happening this time.
The Wildcats aren’t just looking for a breakthrough under Will Stein in Columbia. They’re looking to make sure South Carolina doesn’t get one.
This Kentucky Football team is transitioning from the hunted to the hunter, and it’s Gamecock season.
