Duke has a tremendous freshman class coming again, and Cameron Williams, Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, Deron Rippey, and Bryson Howard are getting most of the attention.
Maxime Meyer is getting less, but you shouldn’t overlook his potential. Take a look at this video, and you’ll see the outlines of a promising player. He can work around the basket with either hand, for starters. He has one bucket where he gets the pass with his back to the basket and still hits it. He passes well and appears to have good
shotblocking instincts. And if you watch closely, he has good instincts as a rebounder.
His big problem in this video is that he can’t impose himself physically. It’s not a surprise: he’s 18 and 7-1. Most guys who grow that fast don’t fill out for a few years. However, in this much more recent clip, Meyer appears to have advanced dramatically. Weight is still a problem, but time will solve that. The progress is striking.
With three talented big guys who are further along though, Meyer might redshirt this season and focus on gaining weight and muscle.
But when he gets there, his combination of size and instinct is pretty promising. When his weight is closer to 250, he’ll be harder to push around. And then his post instincts and training will come into focus. He’ll be able to affect shots and work the boards.
And by the way, one thing you won’t see on either video is a three-point shot. He may have that, or he may develop it later. Right now, he looks like a classic center, and with the game moving back to big men, he’s in a good position to capitalize on that.
