Welcome to the first edition of the Mountaineer Stock Exchange, our weekly look at West Virginia football as if it were a portfolio. Bond ratings grade how stable each unit looked, while stocks highlight the players trending up, down, or breaking out. And if Week 1 against Robert Morris is any indication, there’s already plenty of market movement. WVU turned it over four times and committed costly
penalties in the first half, but by the close the Mountaineers had piled up 625 yards of offense, 27 first downs, and a defense that suffocated the Colonials to just 123 total yards in a 45–3 win.
Bond Ratings
Offense: A
The numbers look great: 625 yards, 27 first downs, and a balanced attack. But you can’t ignore four lost fumbles. Clean that up, and this unit jumps a tier.
Defense: AAA
About as dominant as it gets. Robert Morris managed only 123 yards all afternoon, went three-and-out seven times, and coughed up two turnovers. Rock solid, no-risk investment.
Special Teams: A-
Preston Fox flipped the field with 56 punt return yards, averaging nearly 19 a pop. Harrington’s late hit on the opening kick keeps this from being a straight A, but the hidden yardage was huge.
Individual Stocks
Blue Chip: Jahiem White
The one guy who always looked steady. White ran for 93 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, marking the first multi-TD game of his career. He’s now scored in three of the last four games dating back to last November. Reliable, efficient, and the safe asset WVU’s offense can always lean on.
Solid Performance: Nicco Marchiol
Nicco’s day wasn’t flashy, but it was exactly what you want Week 1. He went 17-of-20 for 224 yards and a touchdown, added 56 yards and another score on the ground, and kept the offense under control. His career-best 85% completion percentage and 4–0 career record as a starter only add to the value.
Penny Stock: Ball Security
Four lost fumbles in one game is brutal. That’s the kind of red flag that tanks value in a hurry. The flip side? If Rodriguez gets this corrected, the upside return is enormous.
Breakout Watch: Cam Vaughn
Vaughn coughed one up near the goal line in the first half, then came back with a huge touchdown to put the game away in the fourth quarter. He finished the day with 127 yards and a touchdown on seven catches. That’s how you regain trust — and value.
Hot IPO: Scotty Fox
One drive, one 59-yard touchdown run. That’s how you introduce yourself to Mountaineer Nation. It’s a tiny sample size, but Rich Rod definitely has something in the true freshman.
Futures Market
Ohio Bobcats
The Bobcats are next, and they’re not a team to overlook. Ohio nearly knocked off Rutgers on Thursday night, with quarterback Parker Navarro throwing for 278 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. They hung 31 points on a Big Ten defense before falling late. That kind of production makes next Saturday’s trip to Athens a serious early-season test for the Mountaineers.
Bubble Watch
Kansas State Wildcats
It’s been a rough start for the Wildcats’ portfolio. They stumbled in Week 0 with a loss to Iowa in Dublin, then barely survived North Dakota at home, sneaking away with a 38–35 win. Giving up that kind of fight to an FCS opponent raises real questions about their defense and line play. Kansas State entered the season as a Big 12 contender, but right now their stock looks overvalued.
Final Bell
WVU didn’t play a clean game, but the final numbers don’t lie: 45–3, 625 yards of offense, and a defense that looked like an elite AAA bond. If the Mountaineers stop fumbling away their own stock, this team could pay big dividends all season.
