C.J. Bailey tossed a pair of touchdowns, Duke Scott ran for another, and the Wolfpack tacked on a pair of field goals as the Wolfpack football breezed to a 27-0 win over Richmond on… Tuesday afternoon at… Doak Field…
Wait a minute! This was a baseball game!
Holy smokes, what the heck?! There’s not much to write about a 27-0 beatdown of a historical nature, but we’ll give it a try.
Thanks to our own carltonfreebottoms for the research on this one, but the Pack notched their largest margin of victory
in a shutdown since at least 1940 with Tuesday’s win. The 27 runs are tied for the 5th most scored in a single game in program history and the most since State set the program record with 32 in a win over LaSalle in 2010.
Thirteen Wolfpack players notched hits in the game and 16 different players scored runs. Seven players notched multi-hit games: Dalton Bargo (4-for-6, 2B, HR, 2 R, 5 RBI), Ty Head (2-for-2, HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, BB), Chris McHugh (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI), Sherman Johnson (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI), Quinn Bentley (2-for-2, 2 R, 2 RBI), Vincent DeCarlo (2-for-2, R, 3 RBI), and Rett Johnson (2-for-5, 2 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB).
Four more State hitters reached base safely multiple times in the game: Devin Mitchell (1-for-3, 2B, R, RBI, BB), Andrew Wiggins (1-for-1, 2 R, BB), Wyatt Peifer (1-for-3, 2B, 2 R, BB), Mikey Ryan (1-for-3, HR, 2 R, RBI, BB).
With the ridiculous amount of run production, it could be easy to overlook NC State’s pitching on the day, but that should be the true storyline here. Three Pack pitchers combined on a 1-hitter over the 9-inning game.
After struggling in his season debut last Wednesday, Heath Andrews looked incredibly sharp, commanding the zone and keeping Richmond hitters off-balance the whole game. It was easily his best outing in a Wolfpack uniform, and the type of performance which will put pressure on the coaching staff to get him back in the weekend rotation. Andrews final line: 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K. He needed just 76 pitches in the efficient outing.
Freshman Sam Harris relieved Andrews and had firm command of his breaking ball to put away Spiders hitters. Harris tossed 2.0 innings of hitless ball, walking one and striking out four. Danny Heintz finished off the game pitching a clean 9th inning, striking out one of the three hitters he faced.
NC State is back in action Wednesday afternoon for a 3:00pm tilt against Akron, which lost at Western Carolina on Tuesday night by a 12-2 final score in 8 innings. For a preview of Akron and links for the broadcast and live stats, check out the article from yesterday.
