Manuel Neuer has already won the Champions League title twice before at Bayern Munich, once in 2013 and again in 2020. The legendary goalkeeper knows what it is like to lift the trophy as a captain, too. And yet, at the rupe old age of 40, he wants more. As he himself reveals, that is why he signed another year as Bayern player: He believes the team can go all the way this season.
“I’m going into the season to achieve everything we can achieve. I think we have it in our team,” Neuer stated clearly
in the press conference ahead of Bayern’s first UCL game (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “That’s also the reason I decided to continue. I know that everything is possible with this team, coaching staff and our spirit. It would mean a lot for me to win the Champions League title for the third time. We know we’ll be facing tough teams, we just have to do our homework and focus on the start.”
That start comes against last season’s surprise package, Bodø/Glimt. Normally it would be foolhardy to pronounce title ambitions before the first match has even been played, but this Bayern team believe absolutely in their chances to challenge for the title. Let us see if they end up being correct.
