Former Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz is poised to become one of the top stars of the next German generation. The 22-year-old has taken his talents to Liverpool and the Premier League — but it was not for a lack of effort from Bayern Munich to keep him in the Bundesliga.
“It would have been great if Flo had ended up at Bayern,” said former Bayern legend Thomas Müller (as captured by Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk, via @iMiaSanMia). “But it’s also nice to see him play for Liverpool now.
“I
always thought it was great when German players left their mark at big clubs in international leagues and held the German flag high. Nevertheless, it’s obviously a huge loss for the Bundesliga when a player like that leaves the league.”
Wirtz joins a long list of stars in this summer’s Leverkusen exodus, a list which includes coach Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid. While Bayern may have it easier as a result, the Bavarians are still dealing with the blow of missing out on their dream add in attack.
Still — Wirtz as a standard-bearer for German football abroad? We’ll be keeping a close eye on his progress in England, that is for sure.
