Liverpool FC were mentioned as a possible suitor for Rennes’ centre-back Jérémy Jacquet alongside Bayern Munich, as Chelsea stepped up their pursuit of the 20-year-old last week. Now, according to reports from several journalists, Liverpool are firmly in the race for the player.
From Fraudrizio Romano: it seems that any deal for the player in this window is off the table, despite Chelsea’s efforts, and a bidding war seems to be brewing for a move in the summer.
Paul Joyce, the authority of Liverpool rumours for many fans, seemed to confirm the rumours in his new column about Arne Slot, with a single line: “Rennes’ Jérémy Jacquet, 20, is under consideration.” when talking about the centre-back crisis and the plans to address that position in the summer.
Kaveh Solhekol of Sky Sports reports that Chelsea are the player’s preferred destination. Not sure if there’s anything Liverpool can do to sway the player if they’re offering those sweet 7-8 year deals.
And if Bayern fan account Bayern Space, who were ahead of the Florian Wirtz story last summer, is to be believed, Bayern Munich are firmly in last place in the race to secure Jacquet’s signature.
Liverpool aren’t doing too great at the moment, and with uncertainty about the head coach position going into next season, it’s probably fair that they’re second in the race to sign this player if Chelsea are offering 7-8 year deals. However, it’s also one of the first concrete rumours to be confirmed by a member of the local press corps since the Marc Guehi deal collapsed at the deadline in the summer window, alongside Lewis Steele mentioning Liverpool’s interest in Adam Wharton last week, so we’ll see what happens.
