Roman Reigns is playing chess while his WrestleMania opponent, World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk, is playing shuffleboard at the senior center.
In Raw’s closing segment, Punk clocked the Tribal Chief. As he fumed at a laughing Reigns, officials rushed in to separate them.
But the fight was already over. Though Reigns got knocked on his ass, he won with a simple jab to Punk’s glass ego.
Reigns Lets Time Do the Talking
Two weeks ago, Punk promised to bury Reigns next to his late father. As the world held its breath waiting for Reigns’
response, the OTC returned to Raw on Monday, smiling. He knew that if Punk had to punch that low, it was because he couldn’t swing any higher.
Moments before Punk dragged his family into it, Reigns dismissed him as champion, saying the title was above Punk’s pay grade. He vowed to send Punk on a retirement tour after WrestleMania before shipping him to NXT to coach the next generation.
The message was simple: time’s up.
This week, Reigns mocked Punk by saying he was younger, faster, and stronger. Instead of witty banter, he hit Punk with the truth.
“You’re old.”
It wasn’t an insult as much as it was Reigns holding up a mirror, Punk’s own words staring back at him. At AEW’s All Out media scrum in 2022, Punk vented to reporters, saying, “I’m hurt, and I’m old, and I’m fucking tired.”
After returning to WWE in 2023, Punk spent time mentoring younger talent in NXT, where Trick Williams and Shawn Michaels praised him as a teacher and future coach.
In January, Punk told CinemaBlend he hopes to retire at 50. At 47, the clock is ticking.
It’s a reality WWE has seamlessly woven into their WrestleMania story. When Punk lashed out on Monday, he wasn’t swinging at Reigns. He was aiming for Father Time.
But like a man stuck in quicksand, the harder he fights, the deeper he sinks, and the only person he’ll bury at WrestleMania is himself.
Checkmate Reigns.
