Free agency is officially upon us, and Monday morning has already provided some fireworks, as Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce is staying with the team on a historic four-year, $116 million deal. That takes the No. 1 free agent wideout off the board, who many teams were reportedly eyeing, including the San Francisco 49ers.
Heading into free agency, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported that the 49ers were among the teams to watch for Pierce, but are also expected to be in on other
receivers. The latter part could come true now that Pierce is staying in Indianapolis.
Another piece of the puzzle is Jauan Jennings, who is arguably San Francisco’s top free agent this cycle. Jennings has been with the team since being drafted in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Over the past two years, he’s seen a much bigger role as a receiver and is now slated to receive a nice payday on the open market.
Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the 49ers are expected to lose Jennings, which coincides with reports on their interest in Green Bay Packers free agent wideout Romeo Doubs.
“Right now, we’re waiting on a number of deals. The wide receivers will come into focus,” Schefter said. “We heard Peter [Schrager] mention Mike Evans, we expect clarity there [soon]. ”Rashid Shaheed, wouldn’t be a surprise [if he signs soon] there. Jauan Jennings is out there. It looks like the 49ers will be losing Jauan Jennings.”
San Francisco is in need of multiple receivers this offseason. Currently, they have Ricky Pearsall, Demarcus Robinson, Jacob Cowing, and Jordan Watkins as their top receivers for 2026. While they hope that some of the younger players can step up, signing a free agent or two will be a key in the coming days.
Doubs has been touted as a good fit for the Shanahan offense, coming from a similar scheme with Matt LaFleur and the Packers. He makes sense as a younger candidate on a multi-year deal, potentially even to end up in the Jauan Jennings role.
Apart from that, we’ll see where the 49ers look at the position.
