According to 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis, the Denver Broncos are signing veteran long snapper Mitchell Fraboni from their practice squad to their 53-man roster. They had an open roster spot available after placing rookie running back Jonah Coleman on the short-term IR due to a high ankle sprain. Klis is also reporting that the Broncos are elevating veteran fullback Adam Prentice and rookie wide receiever/returner Kolbe Katsis from the practice squad.
The Broncos had to make room for Fraboni and Prentice on the 53-man roster after this week, with them hitting the three-game max of practice squad elevations this week anyways, so it made sense to add one of them to the 53-man roster. They will have to open up a 53-man roster spot for Prentice this week if they want to use him moving forward.
Fraboni and Prentice, who did not have to go through waivers, were added to the practice squad during final cuts to allow the Broncos to keep a few extra players on their 53-man roster. They would then elevate them a max three times before adding them back to the 53-man roster. We have seen them use this roster gymnastics in the past, and it is likely something they will continue to do moving forward
With All-Pro returner/wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. listed as questionable, undrafted rookie Kolbe Katsis will get the nod this week. The explosive rookie showcased his return skills throughout the summer, training camp, and the preseason, and could make his debut on Sunday Night Football vs. the Los Angeles Rams. This is a big opportunity for Katsis to prove he belongs on the Broncos roster. Marvin Mims is in the final year of his deal, and Katsis could show that he can be their returner of the future with a big performance vs. the Rams on primetime.
It is possible we see all three of these players play key roles on Sunday Night. Fraboni as the long snapper, Prentice as the starting fullback, lead blocker, short-yardage specialist, and special teams contributor, and undrafted rookie Kolbe Katsis as the Broncos’ kick/punt returner.
