George Kittle continues to progress from his January surgery that repaired a torn right Achilles tendon. The San Francisco 49ers are kind of caught in limbo with what to do with Kittle, as it sounds like there is uncertainty whether Kittle will be ready for Week 1.
And while he’s currently on the Active/PUP List, using the same designation once the season begins would mean Kittle couldn’t play for the first four games of the season.
Decisions, decisions.
My guess is the team doesn’t rush one of the most
important players on the roster, and they start Kittle on the PUP list. See ya in October, George.
Mykel Williams is also a candidate to begin the season on the PUP. John Lynch didn’t sound like somebody who was confident in Williams being ready to play by Week 1, despite the second-year pro’s best efforts.
According to our weekly FanDuel Sportsbook survey, 49ers fans are convinced we’ll see Kittle on the field before Williams.
If that’s the case, how long until we see Mykel? He’s the queen on the chessboard for this 49ers defense. He’s the player — if Mykel is as good as the Niners believe him to be — who can unlock the pass rush and raise the run defense’s floor dramatically. That’s under the assumption he takes a jump in his second season and remains healthy — a dangerous assumption to make.
