Real Madrid will take on Barcelona once again in the final of the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday after beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Thursday’s semi-final between the two city rivals.
Barcelona had already booked their place in the showpiece event by thrashing Athletic Club and must now beat Los Blancos if they are to successfully defend their title.
Federico Valverde gave Real Madrid the perfect start against Atletico, smashing a ferocious free-kick
past Jan Oblak for the opener just minutes after kick-off.
Rodrygo then doubled Madrid’s lead 10 minutes into the second half, although Alexander Sorloth pulled one back quickly to give Diego Simeone’s side hope of a comeback.
Yet Atletico couldn’t find another goal as Real Madrid saw out the win and booked another date with Barcelona.
Hansi Flick’s side ran out 5-2 winners when the two teams met in last season’s final, but Real Madrid won the first Clasico of this season back in October with a 2-1 victory at the Bernabeu.
