The bad teams in the NFL are remaining bad, and unfortunately, the New Orleans Saints are one of them. Even with the loss against the Minnesota Vikings, the Saints’ draft position did not change, so I wanted to look at the second round this week. As of now, the Saints are selecting 38th, and here are two prospects the Saints could select:
Missouri OL Cayden Green
There has been so much investment in the offensive line, but it’s still not enough. I do think this group is underperforming due to coaching. The Saints have 4 high-level
offensive linemen (including the injured Bansk Jr.) that have proven in the past how good they are, and it’s too early to say their struggles are because of skill rather than coaching. It’s similar to the 2024 Saints defensive line. But that one spot that can still be upgraded is RG, and although Jeremiah Wright has potential to take over, the second round would be a great place to just get a starter.
The top option on the board is Missouri offensive lineman Cayden Green. For Missouri, Green has been a long-time starter since transferring in 2024, and he has played both guard and tackle. Turning 22 this year, Green is still young and has space to improve, but he’s not developmental. He’s a powerful blocker who can move anyone he goes up against. His strength (no pun intended) is his pass blocking, but his run blocking is also very good.
BYU RB LJ Martin
The Saints just signed Travis Etienne Jr. to a multi-year contract, and selecting another RB in the draft is by no means a replacement move. New Orleans’ run game is poor and although coaching and injuries have contributed, it’s also clear the Saints are missing a powerful runner. CJ Donaldson has been the best option so far, but he hasn’t shown enough to be RB2 next season, and Etienne has played better with a physical running back that complements his skills.
This class is mostly undersized, elusive, and fast running backs, but in the second round, LJ Martin fits what the Saints need. He can gain tough yards; he’s quick, has great vision, can change direction to find that space, and is super patient.
