This might feel a little like salt in the wound for some Tottenham Hotspur supporters, but as the great philosophers the Rolling Stones once sang, You can’t always get what you want. David Ornstein, writing in the Athletic, is reporting that Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo has decided to join Manchester City over Tottenham Hotspur, and the two clubs are now in negotiations to find an agreement.
Are you surprised? I’m not. Although City look to be taking at least a half-step backwards after Pep Guardiola made way for his clone Enzo Maresca, it doesn’t at all shock me that Gakpo might want to join a team that has recently won the Premier League over a team that has finished 17th in consecutive seasons.
Oh well. I suppose it’s safe for me to say that I really wasn’t that enthused about Gakpo’s fit in this Tottenham side, especially for the price he was likely going to command. Would he have made us better? Yep. I just kinda put him in the Sandro Tonali bucket of floor-raisers-who-aren’t-worth-the-price.
But that’s just me. It’s going to sting a lot of you, I’d imagine, but we can at least hope that Spurs’ recruitment team has a few other options in mind that they might work on ahead of Tuesday’s transfer window deadline. Past rumors have included Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye and Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk and… uhhhhh well hopefully we have some other options.
Oh well. We’re not the first club to get gazumped by City and we won’t be the last. At least it wasn’t Eze dumping us for Arsenal, amirite?
