Former Detroit Lions cornerback Jerry Jacobs was one of the most beloved players in the early days of the Dan Campbell era. The undrafted talent out of Arkansas beat a ton of odds just to make it onto
an NFL roster, including starting out his college career at Hutchinson Community College. With Detroit, his gritty attitude and sticky coverage eventually landed him in the starting lineup, and in the first three years of his career, he started 29 games, tallied 23 pass breakups, and grabbed four interceptions.
Unfortunately for Jacobs, the Lions eventually devoted a ton of resources to their cornerback room over the last few years, and it resulted in the team parting ways with the young cornerback in 2024. His career has come to a screeching halt since. He spent a month with the Los Angeles Rams later that offseason, but failed to make the 53-man roster or practice squad at cutdowns. Since then, he’s essentially been out of football.
But on Wednesday, Jacobs got an opportunity to restart his NFL career. Per the NFL transaction report, Jacobs earned himself a tryout with the Houston Texans.
At this point, it’s unclear if Jacobs will land a job with the Texans, be it on their practice squad or on their 53-man roster. Still, it’s good to see Jacobs get some opportunities because he certainly has the attitude and determination to be on an NFL roster. We wish him the best, and hope that his NFL career continues there or somewhere else soon.
