The Cowboys are looking to be a much
more effective defense in 2026. According to DeMarvion Overshown, Christian Parker’s scheme is letting them play with more speed.
Over the course of the last few months, Overshown has seen Dallas’ defense grow the most in trusting what they see. In his eyes, Parker, who was heralded by the Cowboys front office and Brian Schottenheimer as a great teacher when he was hired as defensive coordinator, has passed along his lessons in a way that all 11 players on the field know their jobs and the jobs of those around them.
“He allows us to play fast just by putting us in the right calls, just by testing us in the meeting rooms, making sure everybody knows who they’re tied to, what the other 10 people are doing on the field,” Overshown said.

Dallas came into the season with a question mark at the backup quarterback position. However, during training camp, Joe Milton has started to separate himself.
Milton’s poise and patience has been different in his second season playing for the Cowboys and learning from Schottenheimer. Part of the credit goes to the birth of his daughter last October.
“Having a girl is different,” said Milton, who’s entering his third season in the NFL. “If I had a boy, I think I’d probably be the same as last year.”

Two “new” starters emerge on Cowboys defense
In each of the two Cowboys team drill periods, there were a couple of changes to the starting lineup. One, rookie Jaishawn Barham started at inside linebacker alongside DeMarvion Overshown, pushing Dee Winters off the lineup. Additionally, CB Shavon Revel Jr. started at outside cornerback, with DaRon Bland on the other side.

There’s been a lot of roster turnover for the Cowboys heading into this season. It’s something they desperately needed.
“The biggest thing for me, if you take our roster from last year and laid it down next to our roster from this year, there is no question the depth and talent is higher, and some of that is us developing some young players … but also the addition of a number of pieces. And that is a credit to Jerry and Stephen (Jones) and Will McClay and his staff, and our coaches have a hand in that.

Dallas will battle the New Orleans Saints as they wrap up the preseason. Here’s a look at what is trending upward.
The running back room has a top-end starter in Williams, and the depth begins with the guy nobody seems to want, Malik Davis. He isn’t flashy, but he doesn’t have major holes in his game. He gets what’s blocked for him on run plays, he can bring in a pass, his blocking is as good as Williams, and he plays special teams at a high level.
In the latest preseason game, he caught a touchdown pass, blocked in pass protection to set up a big play, and rushed for nearly 6 yards per attempt. Dallas has their main backup, and the change-of-pace option finally showed up in Arizona.
