The Dodgers made a bullpen swap and upgraded the height of their relief corps at the same time, calling up right-hander Paul Gervase and sending Alexis Díaz to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Gervase was one of three players acquired by the Dodgers for catcher Hunter Feduccia, coming from the Rays in a three-team trade on July 31. Since joining Oklahoma City the right-hander has allowed two runs in 8 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts against only one walk. On the season in Triple-A, counting his time in Durham
as well, Gervase has a 2.94 ERA and 37.3-percent strikeout rate with only 13 walks in 49 innings.
Gervase made his major league debut earlier this season for the Rays, and allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings, with five walks and six strikeouts in five games.
The right-hander was active with the Dodgers for one day in Tampa Bay, on August 1, but did not pitch before getting sent down to the minors. Once he gets into a game, the 6’10 Gervase will be the tallest player in the history of the Dodgers, a group which is currently at 2,000 players.
Gervase last pitched on Friday, throwing two scoreless innings for Oklahoma City. His last three outings in Triple-A were each two scoreless frames.
Díaz has appeared in nine games this season for the Dodgers, with five runs allowed in his nine innings, with two walks and nine strikeouts. He last pitched on Sunday, when he allowed a run in the eighth inning against the Padres while recording one out.
