After the season Bayern Munich just had, Harry Kane and Michael Olise have each been widely recognized as the best players in the world at their respective positions, not to mention top five in the world overall. Speaking on the Bayern Insider podcast, Thomas Müller explained why the Frenchman may actually be ahead when it comes to the Ballon d’Or race.
For context, most people consider Kane a favorite for the Ballon d’Or this year. However, Müller thinks that Olise’s “artistic” quality gives him
the edge (via @iMiaSanMia).
“With his finishing and attacking qualities, Harry is the best striker I currently see,” said the man known as the Raumdeuter. “He’s got a wide range of qualities, but he’s not a player who can dribble past four people.”
“As far as the Ballon d’Or is concerned, the ‘artistic element’ is taken into account,” Müller explained. “Generally, I see Harry as the more important player — but when it comes to the vote for the World’s Best Player, it’s more for players like Michael, with this dance-like, artistic, ease, magic quality, you can’t learn that.”
“Michael is a player who delivers, a performer. That’s why he will carry and shape this team.”
A tough assessment for Harry, but maybe not an inaccurate one. If France win the World Cup then there is a solid chance Olise may actually win a Ballon d’Or, though maybe France Football will give it to Ousmane Dembélé for playing ten games a season like they did last time.
Whatever happens, the World Cup will will most likely be the deciding factor. If England can bring home the trophy, then there is no one other than Kane who should win it.
