USWNT and Washington Spirit star forward Trinity Rodman has sustained a Grade 1 MCL sprain and not a more serious injury, coach Adrián González confirmed in a press conference on Friday.
The MCL is a band
of tissue in the inner knee. A Grade 1 sprain is the least serious type of injury to the MCL, with Grade 2 and Grade 3 tears requiring a much longer recovery.
Although she was helped off the field in tears at the mid-week W Champions Cup match against Monterrey on Wednesday, González said the injury is the “best scenario.”
“The results we got are the best scenario,” González said. “Obviously, an injury is not always a good situation. It’s not as bad as it could be; she’s starting now the rehab. She has an MCL sprain.”
González said they would take the injury “day by day” and didn’t have a time frame for an expected return.
The Athletic reported on Thursday that Rodman is hopeful for a return before the end of the season. She has previously missed games this season due to an ongoing back injury.
The Spirit have already clinched a second place NWSL regular season finish. They will play two more regular season games, then host a home quarterfinal match in the playoffs.
