RB Leipzig captain David Raum is under no illusions about the challenge awaiting his side on Saturday, but he is not traveling to Munich expecting his team to simply roll over against Bayern Munich.
Raum acknowledged that the two clubs have not been on the same level in recent years, particularly when comparing Bayern Munich’s sustained success with Leipzig’s struggles to match that consistency. However, the RB Leipzig captain believes his team has enough quality to make life difficult for Vincent
Kompany’s men and leave Munich with a positive result.
“We don’t see ourselves as complete underdogs, but we have to admit that, given Bayern’s quality, especially in recent years, how things have gone for them and how the past two years have gone for us, we’re not quite on the same level. We have to be realistic about that. Nevertheless, we have the squad and the quality to cause Bayern problems and certainly come away with something. That’s why we’re heading there with confidence,” Raum told Sky (via @iMiaSanMia).
Raum’s comments strike a reasonable balance between respecting Bayern’s superiority on paper and believing in Leipzig’s ability to compete. Leipzig have the individual talent to threaten Bayern Munich, and their confidence means FC Bayern cannot afford to take anything for granted.
For Bayern Munich, the objective should be to make that gap in quality count on the pitch. Kompany’s side will need to control the midfield, limit Leipzig’s opportunities to attack in transition, and take advantage of the chances they create.
RB Leipzig may arrive with confidence, but the Bavarians will be determined to remind their visitors why they remain the standard in German football. Will Raum’s confidence prove justified, or will Bayern make the difference in quality clear on Saturday?
