If Dragon Lee is the future of lucha libre, someone send Marty McFly and Doc Brown to fix the immediate past.
Rey Mysterio’s pick to lead Mexican wrestling is reeling after falling to WWE Intercontinental Champion Penta on Raw. It was Lee’s third loss in as many weeks.
After the match, he became the punchline of an unfunny Kofi Kingston joke. Less funny, Je’Von Evans — the guy who stood up for Lee — also has a win over
the luchador during this winless stretch, beating him last week on Main Event.
Lee’s latest slide began with a loss to Gunther two weeks ago on the red brand. “The Ring General” not only extinguished the Dragon’s flame, but he also removed his mask, briefly exposing his face to the world.
Before that, Lee had just snapped a four-match funk in AAA by beating Jack Cartwheel to become the No. 1 contender for the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship.
Despite the slump, Michael Cole keeps pushing Mysterio’s endorsement of Lee as lucha’s future, a claim that hurts both men’s credibility, given Lee’s recent booking.
It also leaves fans with little reason to care ahead of Lee’s title shot against Cruiserweight Champ Laredo Kid in a Fatal 4-Way with Cartwheel and TJP. A win, however, could establish Lee as an attraction in AAA before a potentially meaningful return to WWE’s main roster.
But if he comes up short, Lee could find himself lost in the shuffle on both sides of the border. Stuck in purgatory, he might wind up doing the honors for Jacob Marley until December, when the notorious penny pincher resumes his annual holiday storyline with Ebenezer Scrooge.
