Bayern Munich central midfielder Leon Goretzka has found himself in the news a lot of late, hasn’t he?
Well, the Germany international sat down for an interview with Die Zeit (as captured by @iMiaSanMia)
and laid out his thought process for considering a move away from Bayern Munich:
Question: Does money play a decisive role for you when changing clubs?
Goretzka: “No, it’s not about getting the maximum. Believe it or not, that’s the case with many footballers. They simply want to be paid fairly compared to their teammates. For me, the sporting aspect is what matters. I want to play for an ambitious club that has a plan, a club where my qualities are appreciated. Above all, I want to inspire my teammates and take the team to another level. Football is about winning; I’ve had that goal administered to me intravenously every day for the last eight years.”
Question: So it has to be a top team from a major league. Everyone used to want to go to Italy, but now the Premier League is the strongest league in the world. Is that your goal?
Goretzka: “There are many people who think that my style of football would be a great fit for England. But I have time. I’ll listen to everything and consider it carefully. I’m looking forward to the talks that will take place.”
Question: Even when you were dropped from Bayern’s squad, you never complained. What expectations do you now have of your employer?
Goretzka: “The only thing I expect is honest and confidential communication. I would be disappointed if things turned out the same way for me as they did for Thomas Müller.”
Goretzka had some every interesting thoughts that he put out there. The most poignant might be his thought on how things played out for Müller. When fans wonder if the perceived mistreatment (depending on your perspective) of a club legend has any effect on how other players view the club, well, there is your answer. Otherwise, it seems like Goretzka is at peace with the reality that he will probably leave the club in the next few days or in the summer.
