The Nicolas Jackson loan saga came late and had a massive unexpected turn that nearly left Bayern Munich grasping at straws. Just two days before the transfer window closed, Chelsea’s Liam Delap suffered
a hamstring injury that would leave The Blues thin at striker and Bayern scrambling to find a replacement. However, Jackson remained dead set on joining Bayern, and Die Rekordmeister were determined to bring the Senegalese striker to Bavaria.
In a recent interview, Bayern Board Member for Sport, Max Eberl, detailed the last minute transfer chaos and how Bayern managed to land Jackson.
“On Saturday, two days before the transfer deadline, Nicolas was already on his way to Munich. I was having lunch with Christoph before the evening game in Augsburg. Chelsea FC’s match against Fulham was on TV. In the 14th minute, I saw out of the corner of my eye that Liam Delap had to leave the game with a serious injury. Suddenly, I knew: Chelsea are about to call and say they’re putting a stop to the loan. And that’s what happened,” explained Eberl to 11FREUNDE (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Christoph and I started talking on the phone immediately after the game in Augsburg to explore alternatives. Fortunately, Nicolas Jackson left no doubt that he wanted to join us, so Chelsea, in turn, used their network to find a replacement. Sunday night, the day before the transfer deadline, Christoph and I were sitting in the office on Säbener Straße at 11 p.m. and still hadn’t gotten the go-ahead. It was clear that if we wanted to sign another player, we’d have to fly him in for a medical the next morning. So we looked at each other and said: We can do it with Chelsea. It was a collective effort.”
Credit where credit is due; Eberl and Freund worked overtime to make this transfer happen. While Jackson hasn’t exactly hit the ground running at Bayern, he has already proved to be an important depth piece in a paper thin attack.
Let’s see if Eberl and Freund are as adamant to pay the Chelsea man’s €65 option to buy — assuming the conditions are met.
Bayern Munich is steamrolling into the week and is scorching hot.
Hotter than hot.
Blazing hot.
