We’re still a couple of weeks away from the official start of the January transfer window, but if you believe the Italian press, Roma is already feeling a time crunch when it comes to their top target, Joshua Zirkzee. Despite the seemingly perfect fit between player and club, this potential transfer is already being delayed.
Although the 24-year-old Dutch attacker remains a part-time player for Manchester United, a recent uptick in Zirkzee’s performance and the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations have
given Ruben Amorim and the Red Devils pause. The biennial continental tournament leaves many teams short-handed for several weeks during a crucial part of the European football calendar. Consequently, United are reportedly hesitant to weaken their squad in January, at least according to Fabrizio Romano.
If Gian Piero Gasperini believes that Zirkzee is the missing piece of the puzzle, then by all means, Roma should continue their pursuit. However, as we saw last summer with Jadon Sancho, relentlessly chasing a solitary target seldom ends well.
Stay tuned, there will surely be dozens of updates on this story over the next few weeks.
