Cole Palmer signed a new eight-year contract last week good through 2034, confirming his long-term commitment to the Blues, just as the club have shown our commitment to him with multiple payrises now to go along with the impressive contract-lengths. Palmer, in a way, is the poster child for BlueCo’s wage structure (see also: Moisés Caicedo), and so far that strategy looks to be paying off, at least in their cases.
Of course, the ultimate goal amidst all of this would still be to increase shareholder
value return to the top of the league, a goal that Palmer himself certainly shares.
“I’m confident Chelsea will go back to the top very soon and I want to be a part of that and play a big role in that. Chelsea mean a lot to me.”

It’s been nine years since our last Premier League crown, and though it seems unlikely that we would end the drought on that title’s tenth anniversary in May, Palmer does seem to be back close to something resembling his very best after a season defined by poor form and injuries, not necessarily in that order.
“[The new contract] feels nice [so] thank you to the club for trusting me and I’ve got to keep repaying them.
“I just work hard and try to give my best, that’s all. I feel back to how I was and it’s only early in the season, so just keep going. It’s still early with the manager and he’s still trying to get his ideas across, but we’re starting to adapt and especially this week we’ve been working on ideas and stuff like that, so it’s been good.”

Individually, it may never get to be as amazing again for Palmer as that debut season was — such a wonderful confluence of factors that year — but it may yet get much more amazing for the collective. The partnership between him, Morgan Rogers, and João Pedro is producing at a rate not seen since maybe the days of the MaZaCar. If we can learn how to deal with its inherent defensive weakness and figure out the rest of the setup (and the last game was certainly more promising in that regard), we may indeed be onto something great.
