Hey, I remembered to do this again.
Last week, we kicked off a new series for the long, dark offseason, where I post a photo from our media library, and you provide a caption for it in the comments. I was nervous that nobody would participate, but I should have been nervous about having to choose a winner. Below is the most rec’d comment, along with two of my favorites. Some weeks I may choose more, some weeks I may choose less. I might even continue to mess with the format. Regardless, I appreciate
your participation.
Also, a special thank you to commenter Mariners To The Moon for the great headline idea for the series. I asked and you delivered. Caption’s LLog is perfect.
Last Week’s Winners
Most Recs (38): Kemoarps
“Yeah, I just checked. It said five years. You’re gonna be a Mariner until your mid-30s.”
Bleak. I like it.
Personal Favorite: Mariners To The Moon
“Okay Josh, on a scale from tough one to tough 10, how tough would you say your back feels right now?”
This cleverly weaves Dan Wilson’s verbal tick into the 1-10 pain scale, and Naylor happens to be making a face that might show up on the chart itself. Also, not for nothing, this is likely what they’re actually discussing. A perfect caption in every way.
Most Descriptive: ormark
“You know you weren’t supposed to eat that last lemon bar, right? That we were saving that for grandma, right?”
My first thought seeing this photo was “Lemonposting,” so this caption nailed it for me.
This Week’s Contest
This was from a July game against the Rangers and a rare series finale that fell on a Monday. The Mariners lost 7-3. For me, this was the “uh oh” day of the season, with the Mariners looking just as flat out of the All-Star break as they had going in, with a series loss to the Rangers putting them firmly behind in the AL West. (Of course, things were about to get much, much worse.)
This play specifically was the final out of the fourth inning. Wyatt Langford hit a pop up into foul territory. J.P. Crawford scooted over, reached over the rail, snagged the ball, then did a little spin over the camera well. It was the final out of the fourth inning, and the final out George Kirby would record, having already given up seven runs on seven hits, including four homers.
One of those homers was actually relevant this week. Joc Pederson hit it 347 feet at 105 mph exit velocity and 48 degrees of launch, making it roughly equivalent to the controversial fly out that Ty France hit off the rafters in Milwaukee last week.
Rules
- Respond to the photo with a caption, essay, drawing, counter image, math equation, or literally anything Coral allows you to post. It can be funny, poetic, or whatever the photo inspires in you.
- Unlimited entries, though be considerate.
- No politics, religion, generative AI, or anything that violates our community guidelines. Please don’t try to be clever and sneak it in. Please don’t put the burden of deciding whether the caption is against the rules on our mod team. If you think “ah but the people will love this specifically,” it’s best to appreciate your genius in your head and assume we all agree with you. This is meant to be moderately fun engagement bait, and the alternative is a 24-part serialized Dan Wilson fan fiction.
- Please read other comments and “rec” the ones you like. The comment that gets the most recs will be the winner. I will also choose a comment or two that speaks to me personally.
- The deadline for commenting and voting will be whenever I get around to doing the post for the week.
