While an increasingly smaller part of the (SEC) media continues to downplay Curt Cignetti’s Indiana Hoosiers, Kirk Ferentz is entering this weekend’s matchup in Iowa City with eyes wide open as to the challenge ahead. If anything, he’s going farther than most Indiana fans:
This is no small compliment from a coach who is in the
middle of his 27th season as a head coach in the conference, amassing a 2-8 record against the Buckeyes. His most recent win over Ohio State came in 2017, when his unranked Hawkeyes ran it up on the No. 5 Buckeyes to the tune of 55-24.
Knowing that Ferentz has upsets like that under his belt during his tenure at Iowa should help contextualize Cignetti’s comments about the difficulty of this coming Saturday’s game relative to last week’s blowout over Illinois. This is a road contest against a coach who has slayed giants with the Iowa crowd behind him.
As Ferentz’s later comments reveal, that’s the kind of game he’s preparing for.
Indiana may have the momentum and the national hype entering Saturday’s matchup at Kinnick, but Ferentz is preparing for the best. And he has beaten the best before.
