Today in baseball history:
- 1906 – In an all-Chicago World Series, Ed Reulbach‘s no-hit bid in Game 2 is broken by Jiggs Donahue‘s single in the seventh inning, but the Cubs beat the White Sox, 7-1. The next World Series one-hitter will come in 1945, by another Cubs pitcher, Claude Passeau. (1,2)
- 1920 – Cleveland Indians outfielder Elmer Smith hits baseball’s first-ever World Series grand slam, and teammate Bill Wambsganss makes the first unassisted World Series triple play (Game 5) (2,8)
- 1924 – The Washington Senators win their only World Series championship by defeating the New York Giants in Game 7, 4-3, in 12 innings. The winning run scores when a ball hit by Earl McNeely hits a pebble and bounces over third baseman Fred Lindstrom‘s head. (1,2)
- 1945 – The Detroit Tigers score five runs in the first inning of Game 7 of the World Series, and rout the Cubs, 9-3, behind Hal Newhouser, who strikes out 10 to win the World Championship. The Cubs will not play another World Series game in the 20th century. (1,2)
- 2015 – The Cubs even the Division Series with a 6-3 win at St. Louis*. The Cubs score five times against Jaime Garcia in the second, including back-to-back successful squeeze bunts. The Cardinals hit three homers, but they are all solo shots.

- 1684 – Advert in a tavern in Ludgate Hill, London, to view a rhinoceros is published; it is the first rhinoceros in Europe since 1515.
- 1780 – The Great Hurricane of 1780 hits Barbados and goes on to kill 20,000 to 30,000 people in the Caribbean, making it the deadliest recorded hurricane in the Atlantic.
- 1846 – William Lassell discovers Neptune’s moon Triton.
- 1865 – John Wesley Hyatt patents the billiard ball made from cellulose nitrate (celluloid) in Albany, New York (patent US50359A).
- 1871 – The Great Chicago Fire is finally extinguished after three days, leaving approximately 300 dead, 100,000 homeless, and causing $222 million in damage.
- 1920 – Phoenix Cardinals (then in Chicago) play their first NFL game, ending in a 0-0 tie.
- 1921 – NFL Decatur Staleys become Chicago Staleys.
- 1928 – Chiang Kai-shek becomes Director of the State Council of China.
