In 2014, the Green Bay Packers started off the season with an embarrassing defeat on the road. They went into Seattle and got throttled by the Seahawks, losing 36-16 in a game that didn’t even really feel that close. Panic set in among the fan base, and the season felt over when it had barely begun.
Of course, week one can lie. The very next week, the Packers played the New York Jets, quarterbacked by a young Geno Smith, and got their season back on track. It took a bit — the Jets jumped out to a shocking
21-3 lead in the second quarter — but Green Bay closed the gap in the second and third quarters, getting two touchdowns from Randall Cobb and a big 80-yarder from Jordy Nelson to provide the game-winning score in a 31-24 victory.
It was the kind of response to adversity that the 2026 Packers need to channel this week when the team, coming off an embarrassing road loss in week one, plays a New York Jets squad quarterbacked by a much older Geno Smith. The parallels are all there for the taking. The Packers just need to go out and make it happen. (Preferably, without the drama of getting out to a big early deficit.)
