Former Seattle Seahawks running back, Dan Doornink, passed away on Saturday. The team announced his passing on Sunday afternoon.
Doornink played seven seasons for the Seahawks after being traded from the New York Giants. He was drafted by the Giants in 1978 in the seventh round from Washington State University and was traded to the Seahawks prior to the 1979
season.
Throughout his playing career, he averaged 3.5 yards per carry, 5.5 yards per reception, had had 15 rushing touchdowns and 11 receiving touchdowns. Fans may remember the 1984 Wild Card game against the Los Angeles Raiders at the Kingdome where he ran for 123 yards and helped the Seahawks win 13-7. He also caught a touchdown in Seattle’s AFC Championship Game loss to the Raiders in the previous season.
After his NFL career was done, Doornink went on to graduate from the University of Washington with his Doctorate of Medicine. He then returned to his hometown of Yakima, Washington where he practiced medicine, giving back to the community that raised him.
Dan Doornink was 70 years old.
