Germany put up a masterclass in how to ‘control’ a game while having no control at all in Thursday’s 2-0 World Cup Qualifying loss to Slovakia. Despite boasting 70% of possession, the Germans struggled to create sustained pressure on the Slovakia defense — and found their own stretched, diced, and torn apart with regularity.
“We lost the ball way too easily, we didn’t have control on the game,” Bayern Munich center-back Jonathan Tah — owner of a few errant passes himself — said after the match in
comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “It was a deserved loss and a very bad performance from us today.
“This is not our ambition and not what we expect of ourselves. We have to be honest. It’s tough to explain the reasons now directly after the game. We have to do much better immediately in the next game.”
Sometimes, a dominant team loses against an opportunistic one and it is just a fluke. That was not the case at all in this one. Tah and Germany have a few short days to go back to the drawing board for Northern Ireland.
