UNC star freshman Caleb Wilson has been named to the Associated Press second-team All-America after leading the Tar Heels in points, rebounds, and assists per game this season. Wilson is the first Tar Heel freshman ever to do so. Despite the fact that Wilson’s freshman campaign was cut short due to injuries, his performance was one of the best we’ve seen from a first year player in a very long time. He currently holds the UNC freshman record for highest scoring average, 20-point games, and most consecutive
games to start a career in double figures.
The All-America honors means that Wilson’s jersey will be added to the Smith Center rafters. RJ Davis was the most recent Tar Heel to have his jersey honored in a ceremony earlier this season. Wilson will be the 55th jersey to be honored.
It is still sad that we were not able to watch Wilson play a full season in a Carolina uniform. Players like that truly do not come along very often. It’s obvious how much impact he was able to have in just 24 games. His jersey making it to the rafters is a meaningful cherry on top of what he was able to accomplish in what is very likely to be his only season in Chapel Hill.
