Here’s your daily recap and upcoming matches for today.
Day 9 Recap
USA 2-0 Australia (Group B)
Goals: Burgess [OG] (11’), Freeman (43’)
Scotland 0-1 Morocco (Group C)
Goals: Saibari (1’)
An engaging match, in my opinion (other disagree). Saibari’s first minute goal was the difference here and Morocco had the edge in talent but not necessarily in grit. Scotland threw themselves at the Moroccan
back line again and again but lacked the talent to break through; despite a genuinely fun late push, the Scots didn’t manage a single shot on goal. At the moment they’re still well placed to be one of the eight third place teams in the Round of 32, but that’s likely their path out of the group now.
Brazil vs. Haiti (Group C)
Goals: Cunha (23’, 36’), Vinicius (45+3’)
Skipped this match for family reasons. Based on the highlights, this wasn’t much of a contest, as you’d probably expect. Three first half goals and then sitting back and defending the lead. Haiti had a good chance on a corner saved and a few other half-chances, but were never really in this match.
Turkey vs. Paraguay (Group B)
Goals: Galarza (2’)
Another match decided by an early goal. One of these teams is UEFA and the other CONMEBOL, but make no mistake — this was a pure CONCACAF match. Lots of hard fouling, gritty defending, and violence. A red card to Miguel Almiron for saying something inappropriate will make Paraguay’s path more difficult, but Turkey now needs to beat the USA to have any chance of escaping Group B. Consequential.
