The Mariners will look to avoid a sweep in Toronto.
Logan Gilbert gets the start for the Mariners. The rotation has failed to go at least five innings six times over the last 14 games, eating up what was until recently a shortened bullpen. Bryce Miller, who was initially set to start Sunday, has since moved to a relief role, giving them a bit of additional length. But the damage is already done, with a taxed staff desperate to finish the last month of the season without creating any more national
headlines.(After writing this, Emerson Hancock was placed on the injured list with an adductor strain, so who knows what’s happening with Miller and the rotation.)
Gilbert has been the one exception, having gone at least five in every start but one this year (way back on April 22 at home against the Athletics). Like the rest of the staff, he hasn’t been quite at his best the last two months. But he’s surely the best thing going for the Mariners pitching at the moment. They need him to eat some innings today.
Max Scherzer is still kicking and will get the ball for the Blue Jays.
