Justin Gaethje was expecting to watch Arman Tsarukyan’s co-main event clash with Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 331 to see who he might defend his UFC lightweight title against next, but that was before he received a call from President of the Unites States Donald Trump.
Prior to UFC 331, fight fans were making a big deal out of Tsarukyan’s matchup with Ruffy. It was only the second time Tsarukyan has competed in over two years and a big opportunity from him to prove that he’s next in line to fight for UFC gold.
As some expected, Tsarukyan was too much for Ruffy to handle and ended up clobbering him with a vicious knockout elbow with just four seconds left in the first round (see it HERE).
While the knockout finish likely earned Tsarukyan a shot at UFC’s 155-pound title Gaethje nearly missed it. “Highlight” was hoping to watch the fight closely so he knows who he might be fighting next, but once President Trump called Gaethje dropped everything and chatted for a few minutes.

“As soon as the bell rang my phone rang and I looked down and it’s Donald Trump calling me,” said Gaethje during a recent appearance on the One Night With Steiny podcast. “I answered the phone and we talked for like four minutes so I missed the entire first round. Then I look up and I’m like, ‘How did his eye get f—ked up?’ Then he got knocked out.”
“He was with Bryson DeChambeau. We were talking about golf.”
