The Green Bay Packers tried to keep their interest in athletic quarterback Kyron Drones under wraps leading up to the 2026 NFL Draft. After having him in for a Top-30 pre-draft visit, the team initially attempted to keep news of that visit from making it out into the press. However, Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated eventually reported Drones’ visit, confirming the identity of the “mystery quarterback visitor.”
On Saturday following the Draft, the Packers have successfully brought Drones into the organization.
Huber has the report again, confirming that he is signing an undrafted free agent contract with Green Bay.
Drones’ arrival adds to a quarterback room that previously featured Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord behind Jordan Love. Ridder is the favorite to back up Love this season, given his draft pedigree and experience as an NFL starter, but Drones offers an intriguing blend of arm talent and exceptional physical ability. Though a somewhat shorter quarterback at 6 feet, 1-5/8 inches, he posted exceptional results at his Pro Day on the way to a 9.58 RAS score.
Ultimately, fans should not expect Drones to seriously compete for the #2 role this season. He likely has too much development left ahead of him to be a viable option to play any meaningful snaps for a playoff-contending team. Instead, his most likely route to a significant role in the future would be to earn a #3 role over McCord, which would likely result in him spending his rookie season on the Packers’ practice squad.
Interestingly, Drones is the first Top-30 visitor to land with the Packers during this draft process. The team did not draft any of their visitors, although several of them remain available after going undrafted throughout the weekend.
