Bayern Munich came away from Madrid with a superb 2-0 Champions League victory over Atlético Madrid, and the statistics show just how impressive the performance was. Vincent Kompany’s side did not simply get the job done on the scoreboard; they also dominated the key attacking and possession metrics.
Bayern finished with 58% possession compared to Atlético’s 42% and turned that control into a significant attacking advantage. The visitors registered 19 total shots—more than twice Atlético’s nine—while
putting five on target compared to the hosts’ three.
The expected goals (xG) numbers were particularly impressive. Bayern generated 1.77 xG, while Atlético managed just 0.72. Bayern also recorded 38 touches in the opposition box against Atlético’s 27 and created four big chances, twice as many as their opponents.
The passing numbers further demonstrate Bayern’s control. They completed 571 accurate passes at an 89% success rate, comfortably ahead of Atlético’s 363 passes at 81%.
Defensively, Bayern were disciplined, committing only three fouls compared to Atlético’s 13. Both teams had four corners, while Bayern were caught offside four times and Atlético were not flagged once.
There is plenty to like about this performance. Bayern controlled possession, created considerably more danger, and limited Atlético’s attacking opportunities.
Winning 2-0 away to Atlético Madrid is impressive enough. Doing it while winning virtually every important statistical battle makes it even sweeter.
