Off-season ball officially began for the Atlanta Braves as the Glendale Desert Dogs had their first game of the season, falling 3-7. Jim Jarvis and Patrick Clohisy both got the start, and both had memorable AFL debuts with Jim Jarvis picking up a walk in the first inning and an RBI single in the fifth inning. Jim also picked up a steal in the first, before being essentially picked off right after. Patrick Clohisy would get a pair of singles in back-to-back at bats in the third and fifth innings.
Jhancarlos Lara would be the first Braves pitcher to make an appearance as he was the second pitcher used, coming into the game in the fourth inning. After a two pitch at bat to the lead off hitter, Jhancarlos would give up consecutive walks before ending the inning on a perfect sinker down in the zone – inducing an inning ending double play.
L.J. McDonough would get the ball in the sixth inning and would work around a single and hit-by-pitch to record a scoreless inning. Much like Jhancarlos, L.J. would induce his own double play, but unlike Lara it was from his slider that bit away from the batter, creating weak contact.
