College Football can be odd.
And since this is your Nebraska/Illinois odds article, let me break down some other odds for you.
In Week Six of the 2026 college football season, Nebraska hosted the Indiana Hoosiers, losing 20-17. But the Huskers’ peak win probability was 88.2%. A week later, drawing the latest kickoff time in the country at Oregon, again, leading in the fourth quarter, the Bugeaters’ peak win probability was 85.4% before Dylan Raiola came off the bench to lead the Ducks to the 17-14
come-from-behind win.
After the bye week, Nebraska’s offense sputtered against the Washington Huskies. But the Huskers still led 7-3 in the fourth frame before eventually collapsing like a dying star into the black hole that was Memorial Stadium, losing 17-10 on the Blackout Night.
These outcomes are more than just bad luck. They are game management breakdowns, play execution failures, and unbelievable results that make Husker fans shake our heads and throw a little kindling under HCMR’s seat.
But they are also statistical anomalies.
The likelihood of Nebraska losing three straight games in the fourth quarter despite leading the rest of the game (the opening minutes of the Indiana game not-withstanding) are 1-in-4,920, or about 0.0203%.
Folks, we’re breaking into “best 3-9 team in college football history” territory. We opened the season with five straight wins and have played well enough to win two of the last three. I don’t think we played well enough to beat Washington. I’ll rephrase…the offense and special teams didn’t play well enough to beat the Huskies. It’s difficult to ask the defense to do more.
So now it’s time for a Friday night game in Champaign, taking on Bret Bielema’s Fighting Illini. Illinois did to Oregon what Nebraska was either unable or unwilling to do…rush the passer and win the game. Then on Halloween, Illinois beat a rudderless, interim-coached Maryland squad 20-17. The Illini are also 5-3 but have a 3-2 record in Big Ten play.
It’s a Friday night game and the Huskers are going to have to once again rely on their defense. Illinois is averaging 29.0 points per game. Their conference losses were to a Julien Sayin-led Ohio State and Purdue. Again, the 2026 Big Ten is pure chaos.
The FanDuel Sportsbook has the home Illini as a 4.5-point underdog to the visiting Huskers. That makes sense since the Husker players are “pissed off” following the Washington game. Meanwhile, the over/under is currently at 49.5.
Choose wisely. Play responsibly.
And Go Big Red. Always.
Even in the face of Armageddon.
