On January 21, the San Francisco 49ers signed offensive lineman Zachary Thomas to a Reserve/Future contract. Thomas was a sixth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, where the Chicago Bears drafted him.
He’d spent time with the Bears, Rams, Patriots, and Colts. Thomas was most recently on the Texans’ practice squad before being released on December 30.
The team announced they waived Thomas on Friday afternoon. Thomas, an offensive tackle, appeared in 32 snaps, and that was back in 2023 with the Rams. He
played 96 snaps with the Patriots in 2023, with the majority of those coming in two games. Thomas has not played a snap since.
Thomas was wearing No. 61 and listed as a guard on the depth chart, so it’s unclear what the 49ers thought of him. However, it might be a sign that they don’t view him as having enough snaps to go around for training camp, or that they believe he’ll be good enough to stick around on the practice squad.
Here are the 10 offensive linemen who are projected to make the roster:
Trent Williams
Connor Colby
Jake Brendel
Dominick Puni
Colton McKivitz
Robert Jones
Vederian Lowe
Brett Toth
Carver Willis
Enrique Cruz Jr.
Heading into training camp, Nick Zakelj, Drae Nugent, and Austen Pleasants are on the outside looking in. It’s also not a lock that the team ends up keeping 10 linemen.
