Every year we hear the debate about what makes a movie a “Christmas movie” and specifically whether or not Die Hard qualifies. (Yes, it does, BTW) But for whatever reason, we give a lot more leeway when
deciding that something is a “Christmas song.”
Winter Wonderland, Let it Snow, and Baby, it’s Cold Outside are all regarded as classic Christmas songs, but they really have nothing to do with Christmas, and are just celebrating the winter season. I could really say the same thing about Jingle Bells and Sleigh Ride, but I’ll cut them some slack, as riding in sleighs is associated with Santa Claus.
Should I be more forgiving to the other songs, since cold weather and snow are also often associated with Christmas, even though we rarely get snow on Christmas in Philadelphia, and half the time, the weather is quite mild?
I’m not sure. It’s not like I have a high standard about what makes a song a Christmas song. Just mention the holiday itself, Jesus, or Santa Claus, and you’re good.
Now that I’ve cleared that up, let’s take a look at some of the Phillies-related gifts available for purchase this year.
You can get ornaments of some of your favorite Phillies players from years past. Because nothing says “Merry Christmas” like Curt Schilling hanging from your tree.
Do you like dressing up like Santa, but want to make sure your Phillies fandom continues to show? Why not get a Phillies Santa hat and combine the two?
What does a Phillies win smell like? Buy this candle and you can find out 162 days a year!
As for Chanukkah songs, there’s not a lot to choose from. Sure, a few artists have tried over the years, but nothing has really caught on since Adam Sandler.
Maybe it’s a lost cause since the season is so overfilled with Christmas songs? Maybe a Jewish singer could come up with a banger to celebrate Yom Kippur or Passover? That feels like an untapped market. If I was Pink, I’d be all over that.
Anyway, I’ll be back tomorrow with a look at some of the players who have worn the number 18 over the years.
