Newcastle United is mourning the loss of one of the most influential figures in Magpies history after club legend Kevin Keegan died on Monday at the age of 75 following a battle with cancer.
Keegan, who revealed in June that he
had been diagnosed with Stage IV cancer, passed away surrounded by his wife and daughters, according to a statement released by his family.
While the former England player and manager enjoyed legendary spells with Liverpool and the national team, Keegan’s bond with Newcastle remains unmatched as he transformed the club both as a player and later as manager.
Newcastle paid an emotional tribute, describing Keegan as “one of the most iconic, influential and deeply loved figures in our club’s history.”
“Kevin was more than a legendary footballer and manager. He was the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters,” the club said.
The Magpies praised the impact Keegan made on Tyneside, first as a player who brought “world-class talent, ambition and belief” to St. James’ Park before returning to ignite the city as manager during the club’s celebrated “Entertainers” era.
“Kevin gave supporters hope and pride, and led a team whose style, spirit and passion captured the imagination of football fans around the world. He was so much more than an Entertainer,” the statement continued.
Newcastle also emphasized the unique relationship Keegan built with supporters throughout his time at the club.
“He understood our people. He embraced the North East with a passion that was genuine and unwavering, and in return, he earned his rightful place in the hearts of millions.”
The club confirmed it will consider a lasting tribute to Keegan’s legacy in the future.
