The Detroit Lions will try to put an emotional week behind them and get back to football on Sunday, as they face off against the 1-6 Miami Dolphins. I’m sure plenty of players would like to check in with Lions linebacker Jack Campbell, who continues to recover from a serious neck injury, but the message in Allen Park all week has been to prepare and play like Jack Campbell would: with intense focus and grit.
Campbell won’t be the only key player the Lions will be missing on defense this week. Starting
defensive end DJ Wonnum is still sidelined with a concussion, and top cornerback D.J. Reed is out with a hip injury. Several Lions players will have to step up in their place to walk out of Miami with a win.
That’s because while this Dolphins team is just 1-6 on the season, they’ve battled every single week. They’ve had a brutal schedule against the 49ers, Chiefs, Vikings, Bengals, and Patriots in five of the last six weeks—with their sole win against the Jets smushed in between—and they’ve stayed competitive in most of those games.
So the Lions should not take this game lightly. It’s a young, hungry crew that has been on the verge of an upset for several weeks.
