When Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene committed to Michigan last December, the expectation was that Keene would push true freshman Bryce Underwood for the starting quarterback job. However, an injury this offseason led to Keene being sidelined for spring practices and playing catch-up once fall camp rolled around.
Michigan is now entering Week 3 of its season, and on Monday, Michigan head coach Sherrone
Moore was asked about the health status of Keene.
“Mikey is doing really good. He’s been practicing, doing all the throws,” Moore said. “He’s actually worked a lot on offense, and then he worked as a scout team guy to help with looks. He’s full go, ready to go.”
Moore was also asked if Jadyn Davis is still the No. 2 guy behind Bryce Underwood, which Moore confirmed is the case. Davis, a redshirt freshman, has yet to appear in a regular-season game for Michigan. Keene, who’s in his fifth collegiate season, has 35 career starts and has passed for 8,245 yards with 65 touchdowns and 28 interceptions and a 67.8 completion percentage.
Perhaps Keene can wind up challenging David for backup duties, but for now, it sounds like the biggest impact he’s had on the field is as a scout team quarterback. Because of his experience, Keene has also been an asset for Michigan’s young quarterbacks in the film room — Michigan tight ends coach Steve Casula has said that when Keene’s playing days are over, “he can be a football coach” someday.
