Before Sunday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Thomas Harding reported that the Rockies were optioning Zach Agnos to Triple-A and, in his place, recalling 27 year old right handed reliever Blas Castaño.
Agnos had posted a 5.59 ERA over 29 innings for the big league club so far this season. Under the hood, this lofty ERA was fueled by a 6.21 k/9 and a 3.10 bb/9 leading to a 4.20 FIP and a 58.2%
strand rate for runners on base.
He had primarily been used in long relief to start the season with ten of his thirteen appearances lasting more than one inning. This included three separate four inning appearances, the most recent of which came on Friday against the Diamondbacks.
His roster spot will go to Blas Castaño who was claimed off of waivers from the Seattle Mariners in April. Castaño, who had three big league innings for the Mariners last season, has a five pitch mix featuring primarily a cutter, changeup, and slider.
In 16.1 Triple-A innings this season Castaño has an incredible 1.10 ERA but a less exciting 4.41 FIP. He does not strike many batters out (6.61 k/9) but does control the home run fairly well (0.51 hr/9). While Castaño is not likely to see any four inning outings, he isn’t strictly a one innings arm and has had three multi-inning appearances in Triple-A.
