The 49ers had a tryout for edge rusher Jah Joyner, according to the transaction wire.
Joyner previously played for the Las Vegas Raiders after going undrafted in 2025. He never stepped onto the field during the 2025 regular season, but played 52 snaps during the preseason. Listed at 6’5″, 265 pounds, Joyner lined up exclusively on the edge.
Joyner played 10 games in the UFL last season. He had a tryout with the Steelers in June 2026, but never signed a deal.
The 49ers working out a pass rusher the day
before their preseason finale makes sense. They’ll need the bodies. The players in the 2-deep roster have bigger fish to fry, as their regular season gets underway by the weekend. Because of that, you don’t run the risk of the players you believe will play in Week 1 playing in a meaningless game for them two weeks before the season kicks off.
Romello Height has an ankle injury he’s been nursing. The 49ers will give Height as long as he needs to get as close to 100% as he can ahead of Week 1. Height played 18 and 13 snaps in the first two preseason games. The 49ers probably would have liked to see their rookie get a few more live game reps ahead of Week 1 had it not been for an injury.
It’s another reason to host Height’s position for a tryout. That was the only transaction, which suggests the team didn’t sign Joyner and is content with the rotation they can field with their current roster. We’ll provide any updates if that changes.
Heading into Thursday night, with Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams, and Keion White projected out, the other edge rushers are Quinton Bell, Ogbo Okoronkwo, and Villiami Fehoko Jr.
Sam Okuayinonu is on track to start. He’s Mykel’s replacement as an early-down run defender. Sam O is not a player you can risk with an injury. I wouldn’t expect to see him on Thursday.
