The 9-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes (20-11, 10-10) are facing the 17-seeded Maryland Terrapins (12-20, 4-16) after they beat Oregon, 70-60, after racing to a huge first half lead in the opening round of the conference tournament. It’s the first game of the day at 11:00a.
Each team won on their own hardwood in the home-and-home this season. Iowa’s win was an 83-64 victory in December while the loss to Maryland was February 11th. Iowa was able to regain the lead in College Park with about 10:00 left but couldn’t
bring it home.
This is arguably the biggest game of Iowa’s season. Iowa is the top 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament according to bracket matrix but a second loss to a substandard Maryland team may compound their current stretch of 2-6 and result in them sliding down the the seed lines.
That being said: tournament games were part of the value statement of hiring Ben McCollum. As a head coach, he’s won 9 conference tournament titles in 16 seasons as a head coach and 4 Division II titles. Winning the Big Ten Tournament would be a tall task, given the need to go 5 for 5 but strong effort(s) for as long as Iowa’s playing would build some positive momentum towards the NCAA Tournament.
